In this laboratory, R&Ds are focused on light weight materials, such as aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys and its composite materials, for automobile parts. We also study the shaping process of these especially on the die casting In order to reduce the weight of automobile and other transporters, replacement of materials from steels to light metals has been carried out. However, productivity (cycle time), cost, properties and reliability must overcome conventional parts. As to the parts with complicated shape, casting process is one of the candidate to produce higher cost performance aluminum and magnesium alloy parts compared to forging, machining or other forming process with long welding line. In order to apply die castings to structural parts, such as pillars, suspensions, or transmission cases, mechanical properties and its reliability are not necessarily sufficient. For example, various kind and size of defects should be included, such as gas porosities, shrinkage cavities, scattering chills, inclusions, and/or solidification cracking. Thus, it is necessary to forecast and control these defects before mass-production with the minimum trial casting. Furthermore, in order to optimize thermal and mechanical properties, methods of design and estimation of microstructure of materials are also main theme of this laboratory. As the topics of our study, in these days, we investigate the method of estimation and control of the solidification crack susceptibility of the Al-Mg-Si alloy and Mg-Al-Ca alloy parts with FEM analysis and high temperature tensile test in semi-solid region. Semi-solid material processing is also developed by using theological molding method. Equipments and themes of this laboratory are listed in the home page.
